"I'm not good with money."
Video link: secret, or not so secret, language that thwarts your power as a woman in business. Let's change that.
Have you ever told yourself, “I'm just not good with money?”
So many intuitive, conscious, brilliant women I know who are in business for themselves or want to create meaningful businesses say this to themselves.
The thing about this statement is that it is incredibly disempowering. And I want you if you are building or growing a business, to be incredibly empowered with your money. And today, I want to ask you to stop saying to yourself; I'm just not good with money. I want you to own what is actually true about you and your money.
Saying I'm not good with money is probably not true.
It could be that you haven't built the skills. It could be that you haven't developed the habits. It could be that you haven't put aside the time to understand a new software or how you track your money, or places that you might invest your money.
What is accurate is that you just haven't spent the time to build those skills. And saying that it's far more empowering than saying to yourself, I'm just not good with money. Do you feel the difference? When you say I'm not good with money, you are shutting yourself down. It's just that's just the way it is. I'm not good with money, and I never will be.
Whereas if you really own what's true: I haven't spent the time. I haven't had any interest. I just haven't explored it. That is far more empowering and gives you a choice. The truth gives you a choice on how you want to proceed.
But honestly, it is rarely about skills.
Skills are really the least of it. The underlying landscape of what's happening internally for you is far more critical than the practicalities of learning a skill or developing a habit. And in fact, it is the internal landscape, narratives, and wounding that will keep you from developing the skills with money, even if you want to.
What do I mean by the internal landscape? What kind of stories, what kind of narratives? What kind of wounds? For women in business, the truth is it's often gender-based assumptions, stories, and narratives about how women should or shouldn't be with money. How responsible we should or shouldn't be, and who should be responsible. There could be family stories from childhood around what you saw modeled in your family around money.
There are infinite ways that our internal narratives, intergenerational family wounding, and societal wounding can show up and keep us from taking the action we need to take to be the kind of people we want to be with money.
I want you to be empowered.
I want you to forge the path with money by earning a living that feels amazing. I want you to be easeful with spending and investing. I want you to forge the path that you really want. I want you to define your future with your finances and how you approach the growth of your business.
And an essential step is to stop saying I’m just not good with money to yourself or anyone else for that matter. Say what's really true. Either you don't have to, or you don't want to. And that's okay. Or, you just haven't put the energy into that yet, and you might be willing to. Say what's really true for you.
Be specific in claiming your truth, then choose to move forward with your money in the way that really serves you best. I want that for you.
